Why weight matters
A dachshund's spine is like a long bridge with short supports. Extra weight adds strain along the whole length of it. Keeping your dog lean is one of the simplest things you can do for their back.
Check your dog at home
- Ribs: you should feel them easily under a thin layer of fat, without pressing hard
- From above: you should see a clear waist behind the ribs
- From the side: the belly should tuck up behind the chest, not hang down
Ask your vet to show you how to body condition score your dog. It takes a minute and makes home checks easy.
Easy ways to keep them lean
- Weigh or measure every meal instead of guessing
- Count treats as part of the day's food, and keep them small
- Use part of their dinner as training treats
- Weigh your dog every month or two so you catch slow changes
- Talk to your vet before starting any diet, especially if your dog is recovering
